Fostering FAQs:

What does Calvin's Paws provide?

  • Publicity   – We post the cat or dog on our site and all affiliated sites (Petfinder, Adoptapet). We have adoption events every weekend in several locations including Cary, Raleigh, and Durham.
  • Vet Care   - We provide all vet care through our vet until the cat or dog is adopted.
  • Adoption Counselors   - Our counselors review applications, check references and work with you and the adopters to pick the right animal for the adopter’s household. Once the application is approved and you also feel that the applicant is a match, then the adopter completes an adoption contract and pays an adoption fee.

How long does it take for the cat or dog to be adopted?

Sometimes a few days, sometimes a few months we just never know. Kittens and puppies get adopted quicker than adult animals. The more adoption events you bring your foster to the quicker they find a home.

What do I provide?

Shelter, Safety, and Food/Litter

What is required of me as a foster home?

  • Provide a photo and description of the animal for the website.
  • Attend vet clinics as needed.
  • Attend at least one adoption event each month.
  • Provide a safe and loving home while we search for a forever home.

How long do I have to commit to fostering?

Minimum commitment is 2 weeks. Maximum commitment is until the cat or dog is adopted.

Are foster animals contagious? Will my pets or my health be jeopardized?

It is always a health risk to expose your animal to other animals, whether at the off-leash areas, the vet waiting room or other common animal areas. If your pets are current on their vaccinations, maintain healthy diets and lifestyles, and are not immune compromised, then the health risk should be minimal. It is always best to isolate a new animal for 10 days before introducing them to your pets. A bedroom works great for foster cats. You do not need to integrate foster cats with your existing pets.

I don’t think I could foster a cat or dog and then let them go, it would be too hard.

Yes, there is always some sadness in saying goodbye. But there is happiness in knowing that your foster is going to their forever home. When one gets adopted, you make room for another homeless animal that needs saving from death. Keeping that in mind helps remember why we foster.

Are purchases made for foster care tax-deductible?

Purchases made for foster care are considered donations to the shelter and are tax-deductible. Always keep your receipts.
